A retinoscope is a portable device that shines a beam of light into the eye. The examiner watches the movement of the reflected light from the back of the eye as the light is moved both vertically and horizontally across the eye. The red reflex is the name of this reflection. The examiner then places lenses in front of the eye, and as the lenses’ powers vary, the pattern and direction of the reflection also changes. When the examiner reaches a lens power that indicates the patient’s refractive error, they stop altering the lenses.
